Sacred Streets' Whole Community Care
Five distinct practices that feed into one another and flow toward a healthy communal ecosystem.
Companionship Training
Developed by Rev. Dr. Craig Rennebohm from decades of work alongside people experiencing homelessness and mental illness on the streets of Seattle, the Way of Companionship is a principled, practical response by any caring neighbor to the suffering of all our neighbors.
Circles of Kinship
Offering the gift of presence transforms both the giver and receiver, so we accompany companions on their journey. First, to find their place of commitment with a local provider. Then, we support and enourage them as they grow to be a consistent presence, a human antidote to the isolation and loneliness that quietly devastates both the housed and unhoused alike.
Consulting with homeless services
We focus on the ingredients of aliveness and possibility: hospitality, beauty, belonging, and meaning-making; partnering with providers to help them braid these ingredients into every space and encounter along their client's journey. One size fits one, tailored to their context, current place, people and needs.
Convening
We know our role: we are encouragers and conveners who help to fan the flame of our moral imagination in our county. We believe, together, we can beat a new path with our feet as we get in fluid formation. This takes the consistent rhythms of gatherings that encourage re-creation and co-creation toward healing and wholeness for all.
Chaplains of Presence: a street order
“The times are urgent; let us slow down, " says Bayo Akomolafe. There is a quality of aliveness in our neighborhoods that longs for our attention. Tending to this aliveness -learning to see it, stay with it, be changed by it -is in stark contrast to the market ideology that has taught us to move fast, extract value, and manage need. Walter Brueggemann names it plainly: time has become the incarnation of scarcity. Chaplains of Presence are a street order who commit to inverting that logic-practicing deep time work, and recovering what gets lost when we only ever move at the speed of urgency. No charity without contemplation. We hold a countercultural conviction: that every person is a pool of gifts and capacities, not a series of needs and deficits. The street is not a site of problems to be managed. It is a place of belonging to be restored -thick with the substance of possibility. Presence is our practice.
